Accent Laser: Accent Laser uses radiofrequency (RF) as a cellulite treatment and to tighten skin. Doctors usually recommend 6 treatments and results can last up to 18 months. There’s monopolar, bipolar, and tripolar RF devices.
Accutane: Accutane is a prescription medication used to treat severe acne. Accutane can have some potentially serious side affects, so it’s important to cover them carefully with your doctor before embarking on treatment. Topical Retin A is also used to treat acne.
Acne Scars Treatment: Acne can often lead to permanent skin damage and scarring, commonly known as acne scars. Acne scars can affect skin texture anywhere acne occurs on the body. Treatments include laser resurfacing, injectable fillers, subcision.
Acne Surgery: Acne Surgery is done by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon and usually involves drainage and extraction. It's not a substitute for acne medication, but it can reduce the chance of scarring.
Acne Treatment: Acne Vulgaris (the medical term for what most of us think of as acne) can range from mild to severe and can be treated with everything from over-the-counter medication, to prescription drugs to Acne Surgery.
Acoustic Wave Therapy: Acoustic Wave Therapy uses a series of acoustic pulses to vibrate tissue in an effort to remove cellulite and firm up skin.
Active FX: ActiveFX, also called MaxFX, is fractional laser technology used an anti-aging treatment. (Also called MaxFX, ActiveFX fractional laser, and Lumenis laser; when combined with DeepFX, creates Total FX)
Affirm Laser: Affirm is a non-ablative laser treatment used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles and to tighten sagging skin.
African American Rhinoplasty: African Americans considering rhinoplasty typically seek a narrower nose, an enhanced nose tip definition and a narrower bridge and nostrils. Dr. Kassir is an expert in ethnic rhinoplasty in NYC and NJ.
Age Spots Treatment: Age spots, patches of hyperpigmented skin, can be treated in a number of different ways—laser resurfacing, chemical peel, dermabrasion and more. Most of the age spots are caused by too much melanin resulting from sun exposure or melasma after pregnancy.
AlloDerm: Alloderm is an implant made from donated human tissue. It's most often used in breast reconstruction surgery following breast cancer. It is also used in rhinoplasty to camoflauge irregularities or repair a perforated septum.
Aquamid: Aquamid, a permanent injectable filler often used for forehead and smile lines, hasn't yet been approved by the FDA, but is currently available in Europe.
Arm Lift: Arm lift surgery (aka brachioplasty) tightens up the loose arm skin—sometimes called "bat wings"—usually caused by sizable weight loss or aging.
Asclera: Asclera is an FDA-approved drug that treats spider veins by causing them to seal shut. The drug is injected at the site and is said to be painless other than the prick of the needle. Other injectables used for spider veins are hypertonic saline.
Asian Eyelid Surgery: Double eyelid surgery or Asian blepharoplasty creates a natural crease in the eyelid that appears when the eyes are open (almost 50% of Asians are born with top eyelids that have no crease when open). The levator aponeurosis needs to be reattached to the dermis to recreate the crease.
Asian Rhinoplasty: Asian Rhinoplasty is often done to give the patient a more traditionally "western" looking nose, by adding a bridge to make it higher and appear more narrow.
Belotero: Belotero is a hyaluronic acid-based injectable filler, much like Juvederm or Restylane. FDA approved in 2011, the gel is said to temporarily add volume to the skin and give a smoother appearance.
Bio-Alcamid: Bioalcamid is a permanent filler designed to stimulate collagen growth. It's often used for plumping skin, facial folds, and wrinkles.
Birthmark Removal: Birthmarks are either vascular, the result of abnormal blood vessels, or pigmented, the result of pigmentation inconsistencies. The treatment for both types typically includes either laser resurfacing or light therapy. Pulsed Dye lasers are used for birthmarks.
Blue Peel: An Obagi blue peel is a chemical peel and skin care system used to treat blemishes, facial lines, scars, uneven pigmentation, and acne.
Body Jet: Body Jet liposuction, also called Water Jet Liposuction, uses water pressure to remove body fat. It can be done under local anesthesia.
Body Lift: A "body lift" combines surgical procedures, usually a butt lift, bilateral thigh lifts and a tummy tuck. Body lifts are often done to remove and tighten up excess skin after a dramatic weight loss.
Body Wrap: This non-surgical treatment—where you are wrapped up, usually in some combination of organic material and gauze—is intended to burn fat and remove stretch marks.
Botox: Botox Cosmetic temporarily relaxes muscles that cause facial lines and wrinkles. Also used to treat migraines, sweating, and other conditions. Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002.
Botox for Migraines: Botox is FDA approved for treating migraine headaches. Chronic migraines are those that regularly occur more than 14 days per month. Botox will not cure migraines, but may offer relief from pain.
Braces: Braces, whether metal, plastic, or ceramic, can straighten even the most stubbornly crooked teeth. This orthodontic staple can also be used to reconstruct the face.
Brazilian Butt Lift: In a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), fat is taken from any desired site and injected into your butt to give the envy-worthy Hollywood rear view. There are also buttock implants that are used. We do not advocate silicone injection into the buttocks.
Breast Augmentation: Typical implants used are saline or silicone gel. From implants to fat injections to lifting the post-baby sag, breast augmentation gives women a new look.
Breast Implant Removal: Often done in concert with a breast lift, breast implant removal is simply a surgery to reverse or revise prior breast augmentation.
Breast Implant Revision: Dissatisfaction with breast augmentation can lead to a revision. It often involves changing the implant size, addressing post-op sag, or fixing asymmetrical breasts.
Breast Implants: Breast enlargement surgery with silicone or saline implants, supplement breast tissue or replace it during breast reconstruction.
Breast Lift: In a breast lift, or mastopexy, the surgeon removes excess skin to perk up sagging breasts. Performed with and without implants, but because the nipple and areola are moved, you can expect scarring.
Breast Reconstruction: Usually performed after mastectomy (removal of one or both breasts), involves a series of procedures—breast augmentation, nipple reconstruction, tissue reconstruction and more.
Breast Reduction: In a breast reduction, the surgeon removes tissue and skin to make breasts smaller and perkier. This surgery can eliminate back and neck pain caused by large breasts.
Brite Smile: BriteSmile is a professional teeth whitening brand that uses a hydrogen peroxide-based gel activated by a specialized light source to get teeth "9.3 shades whiter".
Brow Lift: A brow lift requires a small incision in your forehead which is designed to correct or improve wrinkling, as well as loss of tone and sagging of the eyebrows that often occurs as part of the aging process. Different types of browlifts include a chemical browlift with botox or any other neuromodulator, direct browlift, midforehead browlift, pretrichial browlift, endoscopic browlift, and coronal browlift.
Buccal Fat Removal: Buccal fat removal (aka cheek reduction) is the surgical removal of fat pads from the cheek. This has to be done conservatively because over time, the face loses volume and can create a hollow or “waif” look.
Butt Augmentation: There are many ways to enhance your behind. If exercise doesn't give you the shape and volume you're looking for, you can consider surgical treatments like a Fat Transfer, the Brazilian Butt Lift, or Butt Implants.
Butt Implants: Butt implant surgery, like breast implant surgery, places artificial implants either under or on top of your muscle to enhance the size and shape of your butt.
Butt Lift: Butt lift surgery removes sagging skin caused by extreme weight loss or aging, giving the butt a tighter, firmer appearance.
Calf Implant: Calf implant surgery involves inserting a solid, silicone shape into a pocket that overlies the calf muscle.
Carboxytherapy: Carbon dioxide therapy (carboxytherapy) was originally developed to minimize skin irregularity caused by post-liposuction residual fat deposits.
Cellulite Treatment: Cellulite is caused by fat pockets protruding between layers of connective tissue beneath the skin. Treatment is challenging, but new technology holds promise.
Cheek Augmentation: Cheek augmentation helps fill out sunken cheeks and improve facial contour. Cheek implant surgery involves the placement of implants (much like breast implants) in the face, but there are non-surgical options too, like injectable fillers or fat transfers.
Cheek Lift: The mid-face lift or cheek lift is a surgical procedure that corrects under-eye puffiness, indentations of the upper cheek, and prominent nasal folds.
Chemical Peel: A chemical peel is a solution that's applied to the face to remove the skin's top layers, leaving skin looking fresher and revitalized.
Chin Implant: Chin implant surgery changes the shape and size of the chin by adding a synthetic implant under the skin.
Chin Liposuction: Chin liposuction (also called Submental Liposuction) removes excess fat from under the chin, neck, and jowls.
Chin Surgery: Chin surgery (genioplasty) can change the shape, height or size of the chin. Chin implants are the most common type of chin surgery.
Clear Braces: Clear Braces (Invisalign competitors) use a series of clear, removable aligner trays to straighten crooked or crowded teeth.
Clear Correct: ClearCorrect is an alternative to braces designed to straighten crooked teeth, using a series of custom aligners/trays.

CO2 Laser: The CO2 laser is a carbon dioxide laser used to resurface skin and treat wrinkles, uneven skin coloration, acne scarring and other skin concerns. The traditional CO2 laser was fully ablative, and now there is fractionated CO2 laser, most commonly known as Fraxel.
Collagen Injection: Collagen injections are used in lip augmentation or to smooth and plump the skin. Results typically last from 3 to 4 months.
Contour Thread Lift: In a contour thread lift, clear threads with tiny barbs are inserted into the facial skin tissue and then used to tighten the skin. It is designed to deliver the results of a facelift without the recovery time or cost.
Cool Lipo: CoolLipo is a laser liposuction device marketed as a more targeted means (vs. liposuction surgery) to reduce pockets of body fat, similar to SmartLipo.
CoolSculpting: CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical device that uses precisely controlled cooling to destroy fat cells, thereby eliminating unwanted love handles, bra rolls, and stomach fat.
Cosmelan: Cosmelan is a chemical peel commonly used to treat facial pigmentation issues like melasma (pregnancy mask) by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme in the melanin formation process.
Cosmetic Acupuncture: Cosmetic acupuncture is a natural anti-aging treatment that's intended to stimulate the body's healing energies and increase circulation to reduce wrinkles, fine lines and folds.
Da Vinci Veneers: Da Vinci Veneers are designed to improve the smile by whitening the teeth, hiding damage and filling minor gaps.
Deep FX: DeepFX is a fractional CO2 laser treatment used to treat scars and dermal lesions.
Derma Roller: Derma Roller (or Dermaroller, Dermarolling) is a skin treatment of shallow scars and facial lines. It has a handle attached to a roller that has needles sticking out of it.
Dermabrasion: Dermabrasion, not to be confused with microdermabrasion, is the process of surgically scraping the skin to help lessen the appearance of scars, wrinkles, pigmentation, and pre-cancerous lesions.
Dermatology: Dermatology is the a branch of medical science dealing with the skin, its structure, functions, and diseases.
Duodenal Switch: Duodenal switch is a type of weight loss surgery typically reserved for morbidly obese patients by shrinking the size of the stomach, limiting food intake, and by rerouting the small intestine and digestive loop to absorb fewer calories.
Dysport: Dysport, like Botox, is injected into the skin and temporarily freezes facial muscles. It's FDA-approved and is typically used to lessen the appearance of facial lines.
Ear Lobe Surgery: Earlobe surgery or repair is performed to restore the appearance of earlobes due to tearing, trauma, piercing, or gauges.
Ear Surgery: Ear surgery, also called otoplasty or ear pinning, involves moving ears closer to the head in an effort to keep them from "sticking out".
Electrolysis: Electrolysis is a hair removal technique that uses electricity to damage the hair follicle. Though it works on all skin and hair types, it is often more painful and more expensive than laser hair removal.
Elevess: Elevess is an injectable filler, like Juvederm or Restylane, FDA-approved to reduce smile lines.
eMatrix: eMatrix (aka Matrix Skin) is a skin resurfacing treatment that, unlike some of of its competitors, is dark skin friendly. The process usually involves 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
Endermologie: Endermologie is a cellulite treatment that combines very firm massaging, rolling and sucking at the skin's surface in an attempt to break up the fat cells that cause cellulite dimpling.
Evolence: Evolence is a collagen injectable that is used to fill out facial lines and wrinkles. Though it's FDA-approved, Johnson & Johnson has pulled it from the market.
Exilis: This FDA-approved device is designed to remove unwanted body fat and to tighten skin. Exilis delivers radio frequency waves that, according to the manufacturer, melts fat.
Eye Bags Treatment: There are several ways to reduce or eliminate eye bags from surgical procedures to injectables to lifestyle changes.
Eyelid Surgery: Eyelid surgery, or an eyelid lift, is a cosmetic procedure that removes and/or tightens "crepey" or sagging skin around the eyes resulting in a smoother, more taut appearance.
Facelift: A facelift is a surgical procedure that tightens loose skin—around the face, eyes and neck.
Facial: This therapuetic, non-invasive skin treatment can involve anything from a dead sea mineral scrub to black head removal, and is purported to improve skin's appearance by ramping up circulation and exfoliating away dead skin cells.
Facial Plastic Surgery: Facial plastic surgery encompasses cosmetic and reconstructive surgical procedures of the head and neck. Facial Reconstructive Surgery: Facial reconstructive surgery is performed to restore facial features that have been disfigured or damaged by abnormal development, trauma, or other medical procedures.
Fat Transfer: During fat transfers, or grafting, a doctor must carefully harvest fat cells that are then injected to firm, fill out or plump up other body part like breasts, face or buttocks.
Forehead Lift: In a forehead lift (or brow lift) a plastic surgeon creates small incisions in the hairline and raises sagging brow lines in order to remove deep wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Fractional Laser: Fractional lasers are used in skin resurfacing—to minimize wrinkles, help reverse sun damage, generally improve skin's appearance.
Fraxel Laser: Fraxel is a laser device often used by doctors to treat wrinkled or sun damaged skin as well as acne scarring and skin discoloration.
Fraxel Repair: Fraxel Repair is a fractionated CO2 laser treatment that is used for skin resurfacing—wrinkle treatment, reversing sun damage, treating acne scarring—when more dramatic repair is in order.
Gastric Bypass: Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that permanently reroutes the digestive tract. It treats morbid obesity by shrinking stomach capacity and, in turn, a person's ability to overeat.
GentleLase: GentleLASE is a form of laser hair removal that is intended to permanently remove hair, regardless of follicle depth.
Glycolic Peel: A Glycolic peel, or alpha hydroxy acid peel, removes your top layer of skin, prompting the production of new collagen and elastin.
Green Peel: This herbal take on the chemical peel contains natural plant ingredients meant to treat fine lines, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation, and acne.
Gum Lift: A Gum Lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that contours the gum tissue (usually to show more of the teeth) and improve the smile.

Hair Transplant: Hair transplant (aka hair restoration or hair implants) is the process of permanently restoring hair by surgically transplanting new follicles into the scalp. The process can take anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 grafts, and because it's surgery, there is some recovery period.
Hyaluronidase: Hyaluronidase is an injectable enzyme solution that speeds the natural break down of hyaluronic acid. It's actually used to counteract the effects of hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Juvederm or Restylane—a sort of injectable do over.
Hyperpigmentation: Hyperpigmentation is the production of excess melanin causing dark spots on the skin. Age spots, liver spots, freckles, sun spots, pregnancy mask are all types of hyperpigmentation and there are several treatments available to reduce or remove the darker skin.
Hypopigmentation: Hypopigmentation is the absence of normal amounts of melanin (the chemical that gives skin its color) caused by disease, injury, burns or other trauma to the skin. Hypopigmentation can be tricky to treat. There are topical medications that sometimes help, and light-based procedures like IPL, excimer lasers, and the Fraxel Restore laser can also be used.
Injectable Fillers: Injectable fillers, like Juvederm or Restylane, can be used for everything from lip augmentation to wrinkle treatment to scar removal. There are lots to choose from, and the Real Self community has tried them all.
IPL: IPL, or intense pulsed light, is used to reduce wrinkles and other skin issues and in laser hair removal. You may also have heard it called photorejuvenation or photofacial.
Isolaz: Isolaz is an FDA-approved acne treatment that's also being used for permanent hair removal.
JeNu: JeNu is a complete skincare system that delivers anti-aging ingredients deeper into the skin through an ultrasound wand. JeNu is indicated for treatment of fine lines, texture and hydration around lips and eyes.
Jessner Peel: The Jessner Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that can be used to refresh skin or as an acne treatment.
Juvederm: Juvederm is an FDA-approved filler used to plump up lips, fill facial lines and remove acne scarring.
Lap Band: An inflatable band is placed around the top portion of the stomach, shrinking it's size. Patients then consume less, resulting in weight loss.
Laser Genesis: Laser Genesis is a Yag laser that's intended to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, reduce acne scars, and diminish pore size.
Laser Hair Removal: Lasers can work on all skin tones, and some lasers are even safe for treating tanned skin. Lasers for hair removal can be performed on any area of the body.
Laser Liposuction: Laser Lipo uses lasers to essentially heat up and liquify unwanted fat which is then either removed, or, in "low fat" areas, absorbed back into your body.
Laser Peel: In a laser peel, the top few layers of skin are removed to reveal the fresh, new skin underneath.
Laser Resurfacing: Laser resurfacing user intense light to treat wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, face blemishes, stretch marks, scars, sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
Laser Surgery: Lasers are used in cosmetic procedures for everything from skin resurfacing to teeth whitening to liposuction to vision correction. All lasers are either ablative and non-ablative. Ablative lasers remove the top layer of your skin, and treatments typically require some recovery time while skin heals. Non-ablative lasers are less invasive, and use heat to stimulate cells to thicken the underlying collagen resulting in improved skin tone and elasticity.
Latisse: Latisse is a prescription drug that produces longer, thicker eye lashes by keeping hairs in their growth phase. The effects of Latisse are not permanent and the drug can cause eye or eyelid discoloration.
Lifestyle Lift: This mini facelift is designed smooth wrinkles, firm skin and enhance the jawline with shorter incisions and less invasive surgery.
Lightsheer Laser: Light Sheer laser hair removal can help get rid of unwanted hair on almost any skin types, targeting the hair follicle leaving skin smooth immediately.
Lip Augmentation: Lips are plumped and reshaped with fillers like Restylane or Juvederm, or body fat.
Lip Implants: You can get fuller lips with implants made from saline or silicone.
Lip Lift: This procedure can increase the size of the lip by decreasing the space between the nose and upper lip.
Lip Reduction: Surgical reduction of the lip can be achieved by incisions placed on the inside of the lip (the moist red part) which is not ordinarily visible. The red part of the lip is then rolled to the inside of the mouth to make the lips appear smaller.
Lip Surgery: From augmentations and reductions to scar corrections and cleft lip surgeries, there are many procedures available that can correct lip imperfections.
Lipodissolve: Lipodissolve is not approved by the US FDA and involves a series of injections that are given in a localized area of the body to melt fat from problem areas.
Lipoma Removal: This non-cancerous fatty growth can be easily removed with surgery and, unless infected, has almost no impact on the body.
Liposculpture: Take a load off of saddle bags with this form of lipo that's intended to reduce pain and recovery time.
Liposonix: Liposonix is a non-surgical fat reduction procedure that uses high-intensity ultrasound energy.
Liposuction: Liposuction can help remove stubborn fat--even when diet and exercise can't. This procedure will improve your shape, but it won't remove cellulite or lead to significant weight loss.
Lipotherme: This competitor of the Smart Lipo Laser does double duty by targeting unwanted fat and firming up skin.
Liquid Facelift: The "liquid facelift" restores facial volume, reduces wrinkles, and provides a degree of facial rejuvenation. The liquid is typically an injectable filler (Restylane, Juvederm and others) in conjunction with Botox which relax facial lines.
Lux 1540: The Lux 1540 is a fractional laser resurfacing treatment used to treat wrinkles, acne scarring and other skin imperfections. It's a Fraxel competitor that has been reported to be less expensive.
Macrolane: Macrolane is a temporary, injectable shaper. You can use it to enhance breasts, calves, tush--without going under the knife.
Male Breast Reduction: Male breast reduction involves removing tissue, skin, and sometimes fat to give the chest a leaner look.
Male Tummy Tuck: Men most frequently undergo a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) when seeking to remove excess skin from the abdomen due to an extreme weight loss.
Mesotherapy: Meso is intended to melt away fat and help reduce the appearance of unwanted body dimples (cellulite) through a series of injections.
Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion is an affordable way to improve your complexion. This treatment uses gentle exfoliation to smooth and brighten your skin.
Mini Lift: Also known as the Weekend Facelift, Quick Lift, and Lifestyle Lift--the mini face lift is less expensive, with shorter incisions, and modest results.
Mini Tummy Tuck: The full tuck's little sister that gives you half the scar but yields only half the results.
miraDry: miraDry claims to curtail excessive sweating permanently. This non-invasive treatment uses microwave energy to shrink or entirely eliminate underarm sweat glands.
MiXto Laser: A laser skin resurfacing therapy that aims to rejuvenate skin by making skin imperfections a thing of the past.
Mohs Surgery: This skin cancer removal surgery is typically performed on the nose, scalp and neck for the best possible results.
Mole Removal: These skin marks begin flat but can usually be removed by your dermatologist, once they stick out, using a freezing or burning process.
Mommy Makeover: Pregnancy can cause dramatic changes, leaving extra skin, stretch marks and sagging. A mommy make over (mom job or mommy tuck) can include a combination of breast lift (with or without implants), tummy tuck, liposuction, and thigh lifts.
Neck Lift: A neck lift gets rid of excess fat and skin (think no more wattle).
Non Surgical Face Lift: Those worried about going under the knife may be able to lift and firm without surgery by using popular fillers like Restylane or Radiesse, laser treatments, and even alternative medical procedures like acupuncture.
Non Surgical Nose Job: Some noses can skip surgical rhinoplasty and, instead, use fillers like Radiesse and Sculptra to alter and smooth nose bumps and humps.
Orthognathic Surgery: There are some jawlines braces simply can't fix. For those that need extra alterations, surgical procedures that realign bones and wire the mouth into the proper place can produce the desired look.
Panniculectomy: This surgical process can help get rid of excess skin around the abs left behind after a massive weight loss.
Pearl Laser: Pearl Laser melts away fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage—and it's FDA-approved.
Pec Implants: This surgical procedure for men involves silicone or saline chest impants for a more developed look.
Perlane: Perlane is a facial filler used to treat facial folds, wrinkles, and lips. Some have used Perlane to augment the chin and cheeks as well.
Phenol Peel: This chemi-peel goes down deep to remove the outer layers of skin letting healthier skin emerge.
Photofacial: This process, also known as Photorejuvination and Fotofacialsing, is a super intense pulsed light therapy for skin with sun damage or excessive redness.
PicoSure: PicoSure is an FDA-approved laser for the treatment of pigmented skin. Marketed as a treatment for moles, freckles, birthmarks, lentigo and tattoo removal.
Pixel Laser: This FDA-approved resurfacing treatment addresses sun damaged and aging skin by targeting wrinkles, fine lines and age spots.
Prevelle: Prevelle is a filler that's similar to Restylane and Juvederm. It's commonly used to plump up lips and facial folds.
Quick Lift: Like the Lifestyle Lift, this minimally invasive facelift is it's own brand of the surgical procedure. Quick Lift is intended to tighten skin around the lower half of the face and neck.
Radiage: A non-surgical treatment that uses a cooling gel while skin is heated, shrinking collagen and tightening the skin and to potentially reduce wrinkles.
