How A Face Ages
by Ramtin Kassir, MD
Most people know all about how the sun ages the skin over the years. There are other changes that happen under the surface that also affect your appearance: the effects of gravity and volume loss (fat and bone). As we age fat descends and is lost in specific areas, jawbones shrink, and eye sockets widen. As a result there's less support beneath the eyes and jawline, giving a less sculpted and older look.
To correct and rejuvenate volume loss, injectable fillers are used (Restylane®, Perlane®, Belotero®, Radiesse®, Artefill® and in this case the patient's own fat).
Face and neck lifting is used to redrape tissues that have descended due to gravity, and laser resurfacing is used to rejuvenate the skin itself.
This patient had all three procedures done simultaneously to improve her overall look.
Hollowed areas in the cheeks, around the eyes, and jawline were treated with fat transfer; then face and necklifting was done to redrape the underlying muscles, and finally fractional CO2 laser resurfacing to make the skin smoother.
