What is Eyelid Ptosis?

Eyelid ptosis, also known as drooping eyelids or sagging eyelids, is a condition in which the upper eyelid falls or droops lower than normal. This can affect one or both eyelids and can range in severity from mild to severe. In severe cases, ptosis can obstruct vision and cause significant discomfort.

There are various causes of eyelid ptosis, including age, injury, genetics, and certain medical conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Horner's syndrome, and congenital ptosis. Ptosis can also be a side effect of certain medications or surgical procedures.

Diagnosis of ptosis typically involves a thorough eye examination, including measurement of the eyelid position and assessment of the underlying muscle function. In some cases, additional tests may be required to determine the cause of the ptosis.

Treatment for ptosis depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. In mild cases, no treatment may be necessary. In more severe cases, treatment may involve eyeglasses with special prisms to help lift the eyelid, eye drops to help strengthen the muscles, or surgery to tighten or reposition the eyelid muscles.
